Change Course

Changing direction can require more courage than continuing.

The meaning

Change Course represents revision after new information.

Persistence is valuable.

So is the ability to recognize when persistence has become attachment to the original plan.

This card appears when reality may be asking for an adjustment.

Not necessarily abandonment.

A course correction can be small.

The question is whether the direction still serves the destination.

When this card appears

Relevant when:

  • repeated evidence contradicts the current plan;
  • circumstances have materially changed;
  • sunk costs dominate reasoning;
  • a strategy works poorly despite consistent effort;
  • the destination still matters but the route does not.

Reflection

People often remain committed to plans because they have already invested:

time;

money;

identity;

public promises;

effort.

Changing direction can then feel like admitting that the earlier decision was wrong.

But decisions are made with the information available at the time.

New evidence can justify new choices.

Change Course asks:

If I were choosing fresh today, knowing what I know now, would I choose the same route?

If not, what would change?

Adaptive courage does not disrespect previous effort.

It uses what that effort taught you.

Relationships & connection

Relationships may require changes in patterns, expectations or form.

Change Course does not automatically mean leave.

It means stop repeating a route that clearly is not producing the intended destination.

Work & direction

Excellent for:

strategy;

operations;

business models;

projects;

routes;

pricing;

career plans.

A pivot is strongest when grounded in evidence rather than boredom.

During change

Sometimes the transition itself changes direction.

That is not failure.

It is navigation.

What to notice

The shadow is abandoning difficult work too quickly.

Novelty can feel like progress.

Change Course needs evidence.

A small invitation

Ask:

What evidence would convince me to change course?

Then honestly examine whether that evidence already exists.

Journal prompt

If I were starting from today's information rather than yesterday's investment, would I still choose this route?

Symbols & visual vocabulary

  • turning ship;
  • bend in trail;
  • compass;
  • changing wind;
  • fork;
  • adjusted map;

Looking at the illustration

A sailing vessel turns onto a new heading as its sails and wake show a visible change in the wind.

Notice which detail first draws your attention, then compare that response with the card’s defined meaning and caution. The painting supports reflection; it does not provide factual evidence about another person or a future event.
