Minor Arcana

The Minor Arcana is the 56-card suited portion of a conventional 78-card tarot deck.

Minor Arcana

The Minor Arcana is the 56-card suited portion of a conventional 78-card tarot deck.

The Minor Arcana contains four suits.

Historical Italian tarot used:

Cups;

Swords;

Batons;

Coins.

The 56 cards are organized as 14 cards per suit, historically including ranked court figures plus number cards. The Met documents 15th-century tarot with King, Queen, Knight, Knave, and cards 10 through 1 in each suit.

Modern deck terminology varies—for example, Batons may become Wands and Coins may become Pentacles.

As with Major Arcana, the term Minor Arcana became standard in later occult tarot terminology rather than originating with the medieval game itself.

Suit structure matters

The standard tarot structure includes 56 Minor Arcana cards. Their suits and ranks are part of the system; a picture of a cup in another oracle deck does not automatically turn it into a tarot Cups card.

A practical example

For our Shared Cup card, begin with its Original Deck meaning and Connection realm. Do not import a tarot suit interpretation solely because a vessel appears in the painting.
